Ahnenfest: Free access to German records for a week at Geneanet!

<a href=Ahnenfest logo German monuments" width="400" height="113" />

October 3 is Unity Day in Germany and October 6 is German-American Day. To celebrate, we are celebrating “Ahnenfest” – Ancestor Festival – with free access to our Premium German records from Oct. 1-6 inclusive!

EDIT: Ahnenfest extended to Sunday, October 9, 2022!

Do you have roots in Germany? October 3 is Tag der Deutschen Einheit (Germany Unity Day), a national holiday since 1990, which celebrates the reunification of Germany at the end of the Cold War. And October 6 is German-American Day, when 40 million Americans celebrate their German heritage. At Geneanet, we have decided to celebrate these two holidays with Ahnenfest Ancestor Festival –, a week of free access to our Premium German records and collections!

In the past few months, millions of European data points have been added to Geneanet. Indexes of over 55 million German birth, marriage, and death register entries are now available, and more are coming.

From October 1-6, 2022 inclusive, take advantage of our rich collections with advanced search options such as search by couple, by occupation, by parents, by events, as well as spelling variants, geographic area and wildcards. And search our Genealogy Library with millions of books and newspapers. To guide you in these options, a help page is available. Tap into thousands of archival records, books and newspapers and grow your tree easily.

The US Census Bureau estimates that nearly 15% of Americans have German ancestry and in many counties of the Midwest, over 40% of residents have German ancestry

Did your German ancestors live in New York City’s Kleindeutschland (Little Germany)? You may be interested in our collaborative General Slocum project which documents the 700 German-American families impacted by the 1904 steamboat disaster in New York.

I am trying to locate Ida Pulz (Dembinski). She immigrated in 1904 to the US from Germany. I have no other information other than birth date of April 13, 1881 ? Year is questionable. Any advice on what steps I should take. My search in Germany came with no results.

Looking for birth record of Herman John Miller born in Germany on 10-14-1865

Trying to access German records to no avail. Searching for Christina Dieker, 1899-1972 from Baccum Germany. How do you connect to ancestry.com German records??

Answer from Geneanet: Some, but by no means all, Ancestry German collections have been shared with Geneanet. We also have collections which are not available at Ancestry. Do you mean this Baccum? have you tried contacting the Standesamt there?

I am not finding the option to “Be sure your account and the site language are set to German or English.”

Answer from Geneanet: For the site language, it’s simple: if you are seeing the site in English or German, you are all set; otherwise, go to the bottom left of a page and select one of these two languages. For the account setting, click on your orange profile button in the upper right corner and select Profile. Under “Display Mode”, you will see “Language”. This setting determines the account language for newsletters and announcements as well as your default language for the site, and in the case of Ahnenfest, is the selector for free access to German Premium records. I’m confused. When I search “Free access to German records for a week…” what am I searching? It looks like I get the results from a standard Geneanet search, nothing from specific “German records.” Am I doing somethin wrong?

Answer from Geneanet: You are right, the search is the same. But this week (we have just extended Ahnenfest to Sunday Oct.9), “P” badged records (Premium) are available to all free members in German and English. Free members also have all search options available, such as a search by couple. And the Genealogy Library of books and newspapers for Premium members is open as well!

Searching German ancestors . Says premium free this week. Cannot access

Answer from Geneanet: Access should indeed be open to our German records without payment (or registering payment information). You should also have advanced search options enabled and access to the Genealogy Library books and newspapers. Some visitors have had issues however. Try logging out, closing all Geneanet tabs or windows, and logging in again. Try a different browser as well. Be sure your account and the site language are set to German or English. If the problem persists, please leave a message in our forum which is monitored by support. Thanks for your patience!

I am researching Dismas Leibfritz born circa 1810 and his son Stephen Leibfritz born 26 Dec 1836 baptismal record from Archdiocese of Frieburg im Breisgau, Catholic Church Records, 1678-1930. Dismas was born 7 Mar 1810 • Neufra, Gammertingen, Hohenzollern, Preussen, Deutschland. Dismas emigrated to the US about 1860 and Stephen followed in 1865.I am unable to trace them any further back.

I did everything that was recommended. Login, logout. Different browser. Both English and German. Keeps directing me to pay. Please help me. Thank you

Answer from Geneanet: We have tested your account and the access to Premium records is available and should be working. Although some Premium features are not open, you should have: advanced search options, access to “P” badged German records, and access to the Genealogy Library. If you have none of these, try closing all Geneanet browser tabs or windows, then opening a new tab or window and logging in. If the problem persists, please leave a message in our forum which is monitored by support. Thanks for your patience!

What little I know about this website and my family history, I am finding much information that is quite helpful. Of course I wish there was more but I am satisfied. Thank You!

The “free access” to Premium does not work! When I try to go to Name Variants, a screen comes up with the message “Reserved for Premium members”, and suggesting a 3-month membership for $12.50. (that isn’t very expensive, but neither is it free!)

Answer from Geneanet: Access should indeed be open to our German records without payment (or registering payment information). Some visitors had issues this weekend. Try logging out and logging in again. You can also use the wildcard asterisk “*” character to search name variants. Be sure your account and the site language are set to German or English. If the problem persists, please leave a message in our forum which is monitored by support. Thanks for your patience!

This doesn’t work at all. I click on the link to view more as premium and receive an error: This page isn’t workingen.geneanet.org redirected you too many times.
Try clearing your cookies.
ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS. And yes, I did clear my cookies. Which by the way, every time I go back to the main page I’m asked if I want to accept cookies. Something ain’t working right here.. You think you’d ever get to pay for premium when the site doesn’t work. Pfft.

Answer from Geneanet: Perhaps a browser issue? Have you tried with a different browser?

Searched, but at the bottom it said 10 more results with Premium access- but hit a paywall.

Answer from Geneanet: Are the advanced search options and the Genealogy Library results available? If these are working, there is a problem. Our forums which are monitored by support can assist you.

Not really free. I just hit the paywall.

Answer from Geneanet: A German record? How about the advanced search options and the Genealogy Library? All three of these premium features should be working.
